As Leni Cano and others have stated, be careful out there. There are many types of malicious code just waiting for us out there. A lot is a scam to get you to download it to your computer. Here are the links for free stuff that should help to keep your computer safe and do not contain Adware themselves as some of the products you buy to prevent it.
Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/) Download the free program. Go here and download the Add-ons (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/addons/) VX2 Cleaner, messenger control and OE-W Messengerctrl.
SpyBot (http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html) Download the program here.
Rapid Blaster Killer (http://www.wilderssecurity.net/specialinfo/rapidblaster.html) Download the program here. Make a folder in your program files folder copy the file there and create a link to it.
AVG AntiVirus (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5) Download the program here.
Now this is a little tricky but if you go to the TrendMicro Site (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) and run the housecall scan. It will put a file named SpSubRx.exe on your computer, find it mark it as read only, copy it to a folder and create a shortcut to it and you can us it over and over again without downloading it from this site each time. It is updated about every six months. Then do the same thing again, sometimes it is a different name.
With all of these programs and using them once a week should keep your computer pretty clean. Another thing is to use another browser for your surfing instead of Internet Explorer. You as just asking for problems using it. I personally use Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) They have all kinds of extensions available to help in security and such, I use the following extensions, AdBlock, CustomizeGoogle, Disable Targets for Downloads, No Script, ShowIP, Spoof Stick, TargetAlert, and a bunch of others that make surfing cool and informative.
I hope this helps. This are the best of the free resources out there. Take care and be safe.
