Before anyone asks ... yes, I purged (deleted) everything from this BBS that was posted prior to Decmber 1st, 2006. I did this because we had over 10,000 posts in the archive and the server tech guy said it would take forever to migrate that much stuff over from the old server, to the new.

Great job by the server tech guy though, who moved everything perfectly. Everything seems to be in place. He mentioned to me that he's fast becoming a nail guy after looking closely at the site :)

Why did we move?

Because, it seems we were sharing a server with 129 other domains. In most agreements with these web hosts, the small print says that we cannot use more than 5% of the server resources at any one time, as other sites using the same machine will suffer. Well, I was informed that we were using as much as 40% of the CPU resources at peak times and rarely went below 8% over the past 18 months. They did an audit on users for our machine and we were pigs gobbling up everything and causing other sites to not respond and causing other problems.

So, after being kicked off three servers in the past 10 years for having too much traffic, it's refreshing to note that this server that we use did not kick us off - they just suspended the BBS last Saturday as the BBS is what was causing the problems.

We worked it out with them, and now we have our own machine, with limits that I imagine we'll eventually grow into and surpass as time goes by.

Let me thank Neal at Ournails for his immediate concern when we went down - it's great to know people are there offering help when you're having problems.

Ok I think that's all we need to know for now. We should be back full time on line now here without interruptions.

Sorry for rambling .... later.

Great!!!
Glad it all worked out...
And now we may have a new member in the community with the tech dude.
We will always stand behind ya when you wobble a little bit.
For sure.. Nailbytes IS and always WILL BE a pillar on the web for us.

...but really.
That much bandwidth being used is weird.
We've got action on here but...wow.
Okay.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for keeping the nailcommunity "alive" with this site. :)

What should we do without you.....

I hope the server(s) will be able to do their "job" as well as they have done in the past.

Greetings,

Martin aka luvlongestnails

The first thing I noticed when I got back from Vacation was that The Nailbytes forum was down.

Great to see it running again.

Thanx for all the efforts.

Here's the weird thing about the past week....unlike most sites that might suddenly disappear or go down, I never was concerned once. Ed, I guess that's because, of all the sites I have been involved with, you alone have proven to be (a)reliable, (b) persistent, and (c) without any of the rhetoric, committed to the nth degree. I just KNEW you'd be back, that you'd bring as much with you as you possibly could, and that you'd return with somethinng even better than before.

That you represent that kind of consistency on the 'Net where things change faster than the moods of my teenage kids, says much about you and your commitment to things we all hold dear. I guess it also says something about the commitment of everyone in this community if we can drive a BBS that far over our target capacity. I can't begin to imagine the cost in time, money and resources for you to provide the framework for this community. I'm sure you have gotten rewards from it or the return wouldn't be worth it, but still, there's got to be more than just self-satisfaction driving your efforts, and I am very grateful for that. Thank you for all that you have put into this. For that matter, thank you to all who contribute with their words, their photos, their "research" for new links and for the many eyes that provide the fuel to grow. I don't pretend to understand why I like long nails so much, I probably don't even care - but I know that it would be much emptier to go back to a time 20 years ago when I thought it was "just me" and i was relegated to sneaking glances at the TV or an enticing set of nails that passed by on the street.

And I'm glad you still have a life, too. LOL...Actor, traveler, and, I think, hockey fan too. Something has to be sacrificed somewhere, and I'm guessing it must be sleep......Oh, and before I finish, I'd also like to thank the people like Neal, and Cassie, who over the years have helped or have been willing to help, with hardware and bandwidth, and anything else that was needed. That group has played a big part in the ongoing success of this community too, I suspect, over the years, and enabled the kind of growth and consistency we all have relied upon.

OK, I think I have gotten EDitor off the hook on any charge of rambling by setting the new standard, so I am content...
