Before anyone asks ... yes, I purged (deleted) everything from this BBS that was posted prior to Decmber 1st, 2006. I did this because we had over 10,000 posts in the archive and the server tech guy said it would take forever to migrate that much stuff over from the old server, to the new.
Great job by the server tech guy though, who moved everything perfectly. Everything seems to be in place. He mentioned to me that he's fast becoming a nail guy after looking closely at the site :)
Why did we move?
Because, it seems we were sharing a server with 129 other domains. In most agreements with these web hosts, the small print says that we cannot use more than 5% of the server resources at any one time, as other sites using the same machine will suffer. Well, I was informed that we were using as much as 40% of the CPU resources at peak times and rarely went below 8% over the past 18 months. They did an audit on users for our machine and we were pigs gobbling up everything and causing other sites to not respond and causing other problems.
So, after being kicked off three servers in the past 10 years for having too much traffic, it's refreshing to note that this server that we use did not kick us off - they just suspended the BBS last Saturday as the BBS is what was causing the problems.
We worked it out with them, and now we have our own machine, with limits that I imagine we'll eventually grow into and surpass as time goes by.
Let me thank Neal at Ournails for his immediate concern when we went down - it's great to know people are there offering help when you're having problems.
Ok I think that's all we need to know for now. We should be back full time on line now here without interruptions.
Sorry for rambling .... later.
