The EDitor's Blog .... A Daily Dose Of NailBytes

September 24, 2007

Nailbytes was born on June 1, 1997. At that time the site was called "Real Women - Real Nails". The site was comprised of three partners, more or less. They being "Viking John" who has since moved on the bigger things. We also had "Scott K" supplying us with the original material among others. The concept was created in a few nights in a chat room that has since been forgotten. Over the first 4 months the site took on different looks and implimented new ideas. When October 1997 arrived, I was told that Viking John was no longer interested in continuing. This meant that I had to go out and learn HTML and web authoring pretty quick, or I was toast. I did so, fast. I bought and paid for a program that guided me through and it's a program we used right up until January of this year. I bought a new computer in January and I could not load the software into this monster - I guess the backwards compatability on the program had finally run it's course.

Over the years since, we added a lot of things, we changed the name of the site - a couple of times. We were blessed with tremendous support form all corners of the world, we were given a lot of things for free. The spirit by which we were born way back 10 years ago still lives on. Out mandate has never changed. Our goals have been met many times, but we keep raising the bar. We've grown along with the internet. We've tried to keep up. In some cases we do ok. In others we lag behind. But one thing is certain, you'll always get a half decent effort from this corner in any event.

I thought it might be interesting to look back today on one aspect of our site which no one has ever asked me about - ever. I'd have thought in 10 years, someone would have asked, and given me the opportunity to explain - but no one ever did. So this is our first version of our N.A.Q. - Never Asked Questions.

What I am leading to here is the titles and themes we've named some of our pages and features, and some of the references to songs and music that we've alluded to over the past 10 years. Can you beleive some of these things have never changed in 10 years!

NailBytes inspired by song ...

  • Crosstown Traffic - I swear, I am deaf. one reason I am deaf is because of Jimi Hendrix. Heaphones should be banned, especially the ones with volume control. Gotta Blame someone. Listen

  • Prime Time Galleries - Mellow and just a perfect title for the best stuff on the net. Listen

  • T.B. Sheets - This is the section on the BBS that has nothing to do with nails. I just happened to have the Van Morrison song playing at the time I was fiddling and diddling with the board sections. The title means nothing, really. But what a tune. Sorry, this is the only version I could find on You Tube that was half decent - I'm still looking for the original version there. Listen

  • Back in the year 2000 I did my first travelog on a trip to Vegas. I came away with few pictures, but many memories. One of the most memorable moments in time had to be the last few moments on Fremont Street, at the front entrance of Binions Casino .... Shel Dave and I had to leave for the airport - we were late - our flights were about to leave - we were saying goodbye to the others ... there was Linda and Lon, there was Jeff and Gina ..... we say goodbye, turned around and walked toward the parking garage at The Golden Nugget. This tune was playing on the Fremont Street Sound System - loud and thumping - unebleivably tattoed into my brain is this three minute walk as we headed toward the car, like it was yesterday. Listen

  • Staying on Fremont Street, and that sound system during that same weekend, I made reference to my first solo walk from one end of Fremont Street to the other and I recall vivdly steppijng out of The Golden Gate - my hotel for that weekend - and hearing this tune from The Doors. It was never a hit and the beginning is so annoying but as I walked, my step had some jump to it, as at the time, I hadn't heard this insignificant song for at least 10 years. Listen

  • One of the bright stars on Nailbytes over our 10 years was the original Lily. She needs no introduction here. That sweetie made pictures for us for one full year and kept us on line with her amazing beauty. I got to meet her in person on my first trip to Las Vegas. In a couple of update galleries, we made reference to her nail color and her personality. Here was the first, another Van Morrison live version here. She's as sweet as ... you know what. Listen

  • In another Lily update, i made reference to a color that I called "Wild Mountain Thyme". It's an old British folk song that I originally fell in love with courtesy of the Byrds and later Glen Frey. I cannot find either version on You Tube, we'll have to settle for this barely acceptable facsimile. Hey most people shake their heads at me when I say I like this .... and I cannot explain it, but I get this rush that takes me back to the sixties. Oh, another topic for another day. Listen

  • Can I do a feature on music and not pay tribute to one of the classiest women I've met in my life? Nope. For some strange reason, i cannot help but think of Mz Eroticaclawz when I hear this one. By the way, this came out even BEFORE my time. Listen

Other great stuff filed away that I havn't made reference to as of yet ...

  • 10 Years After Listen

  • The High School Dance Listen

  • Speak Louder Please, I'm Deaf Listen

  • The Editor's Favorite Song Of All Time Listen

And, your reward for reading down this far and not falling asleep ...... speaking of all time favorites .... Wild Wanton.
