Las Vegas Travelogue - Gold Spike & El Cortez

First off, thanks to Rebs once again for supplying the nail pictures you see. She had green toes throughout our Vegas visit and the pics she sent in pretty much represent what we saw. Also there we see a nice shot of Linda's gorgeous naturals just glistening away like expensive gems.

Now getting to our trip .... Linda, Charlie and I decided to do a backstreet kind of walk instead of the normal routine of walking from the far east end of Fremont, passing Las Vegas Blvd and heading on to El Cortez. We decided to take the "scenic route" on Friday evening. We were waiting for Rebs and Lon to show up and we decided to meet them at El Cortez to do dinner at a very nice restaurant called Roberta's in El Cortez Casino..

The scenic route that I refer to begins on the corner of Fremont Street where Binions and Fremont Casino face each other. We walked directly north towards Lady Luck which is still closed due to renovations. We get to Lady Luck on the left and then to the right we see the ever polular Godforsaken Gold Spike Hotel Casino. The Gold Spike is the butt of all Las Vegas jokes. It is the dirtiest, oldest, most unkept place of business I've ever seen in my life. My first visit here was in 2003 with Angry Frank and Charlie. As I recall we walked in, and decided to immediately walk out the other door because of the stench. On this day however, Linda, Charlie and I decided to do some gambling here. Immediatley Linda hit a big one. She took the cash, we left.

I'd read somewhere a few months ago where some California millionaires bought the Spike, along with a motel situated alongside of it. We saw it, and I was in disbelief ... the motel is even more run down than Golden Spike is. Amazing. These guys bought them both! Well, all I can say is in a few years I'll go take a look when renovations are done and update this report. But .... this requires a miracle they are both so bad.

We made our way east, one blick over and gazed upon my dream condominium building. From there, a bit south we walked on Las Vegas Blvd to the new entrance to El Cortez. This is impressive. The new entrance runs between this condo building and some run down stores, but it's lined with palm trees. An amazing upgrade. Very beautiful indeed. When this corner is finished, it will be a gem. At this point, quite honestly, it got so windy, it almost took my big body and flew me away the wind was so strong. Well, almost. It was an unbeleivable wind, must have been a hundred miles an hour, and lasted about 15 minutes. Quite a memory. Poor Charlie had to hang on to one of the palm trees or he'd have been blown away - and what a sad tale that would have been to report here!

On to the impressive, every improving El Cortez. This historical hotel casino goes back to the 1940's. This is the hotel that Bugsy Siegel owned and then sold in order to take that money to open up The Flamingo. The Flamingo is the casino that started it all on "The Strip" as it's now become known as.

We got inside El Cortez and played a few machines and met up with Lon and Rebs. It was a great night as usual with these fine people.

This is what I love about Vegas and Fremont. Every visit is unique. Something memorable always happens. The Gold Spike, The Motel, the new entrance, the wind storm, and very nice dinner. Doesn't get anybetter than that.

Pictures to support all I've just written about follow. We'll continue tomorrow with more Vegas pictures.
